Solid Ground, New Views | A New Deck in Somerset, NJ

At Upgryd, we recently completed a ground-up deck build for a home in Somerset, NJ. The back of the house had a paver patio and not much else — no elevated outdoor living space, no real transition between the house and the yard, just a slab of pavers backing up to a set of French doors. The goal was straightforward: give this home a proper deck that made use of the yard and matched the scale of the house.

Because the deck runs along a house with an L-shaped footprint, we planned two connected sections — a larger main run off the back and a smaller wraparound extension — set on a helical pier foundation. Helical piers let us establish a solid, code-compliant foundation quickly and with minimal disruption to the existing patio and landscaping, without the cure time a poured footing would need.

With the piers set, our crew framed the deck in pressure-treated 2x10 lumber, laid out to carry the full L-shape cleanly off the house. Framing a two-section deck like this takes care at the layout stage — every joist has to land square so the picture-frame border and the boards inside it read as one continuous surface once the decking goes down.

From there we installed Deckorators Summit composite decking in Boulder, with a single-board picture frame in the same color running the perimeter. The stairs down to the yard got matching Summit Boulder treads and risers, fastened with the Cortex hidden fastening system so there's no visible hardware on the treads or the final field boards.

For the railing, we went with Trex Enhance Composite Railing in Saddle, paired with black aluminum balusters — a combination that reads clean against the Boulder decking without disappearing into it. Underneath, we closed off the deck with vinyl lattice skirting in brown with a Boulder-toned frame, plus a dedicated access gate for anyone who needs to get under the deck later, and a gravel weed barrier so the space underneath stays low-maintenance.

The finished deck gives this home a real outdoor living footprint it didn't have before — a full L-shaped surface that steps down to an open backyard framed by mature trees, with the Trex Enhance railing and black balusters carrying the same look around both sections and down the stairs.
