From One Wood Stair to a Full Backyard Deck — A New Deck in Iselin, NJ

At Upgryd, we recently built a new deck in Iselin, NJ behind a gray-sided two-story home. The only way out of the sliding door was a single run of wood steps with a wood railing, dropping straight onto the lawn. There was no place to set a grill, a table or a chair.

There was no old deck to tear off, so this was a ground-up build. The sliding door sits well above the grass, which called for a raised deck, and we set the footings on helical piers. They install quickly, and unlike poured concrete footings they don't heave with frost or settle over time.

The surface is Deckorators Venture in Sandbar, a warm gray-brown that sits quietly against the gray siding. Sandbar runs through every part of the deck: the field boards, the picture-frame border, the stair treads, the risers, the divider boards and the fascia. Because the color never changes, the deck reads as one clean piece from the top step to the rim.

The railing is white vinyl with black aluminum balusters. White and black both read cleanly against the Sandbar boards, and the railing runs along the open sides of the deck and both sides of the stairs. Round black LED lights are set into the stair risers, so the steps are lit after dark without a fixture on the railing.

The finished deck gives the back door what it was missing. A two-step landing sits at the sliding door, the main field is open for a grill and seating, and a full run of stairs leads down to the lawn. Because the decking is Deckorators, the project carries our 25-year limited labor warranty.
