Warm Mesa, Clean Lines — A Newly Resurfaced Covered Deck in Blandon, PA

At Upgryd, we recently completed a deck resurface in Blandon, PA on a covered, multi-level deck that sits beside a fenced backyard pool. The layout already worked. The existing roof stayed exactly as it was, the deck was wide enough to seat and cook on, and the stairs landed where the family needed them. The surface and the railings were what had worn out.

The before photos show it plainly. The decking and balusters were stained wood, the finish had weathered, and the stair risers had white paint peeling away from the boards. The treads sat out of line where the stairs met the deck. Beneath the deck, the open area was wired off and grown over with weeds. This was a deck with a sound footprint and a tired skin.

We started by taking off the old decking, stair treads and railings. Before any composite went down, we prepared the framing for the new surface and put joist tape on every joist, so the top edge of each joist is protected from the moisture that sits under boards. The stairs got the same attention, and we added one step to the stair run during the resurface.

For the surface we installed Deckorators Voyage decking in Mesa, a warm brown. A single-board picture frame in Mesa borders the deck, and the stair treads are Mesa to match. The 1x12 composite fascia and the stair risers are Sandbar, a lighter tone that outlines the deck below the boards. On the lower face of the deck we installed Sandbar horizontal composite skirting with one under-deck access gate, so the space beneath is closed in and still reachable.

Around the perimeter we installed RDI white vinyl railing with black aluminum balusters, topped with a Mesa 1x4 cocktail rail. The cocktail rail gives you a flat ledge at the deck edge and carries the decking color up to eye level. Under the existing roof, the support columns now have 4x4 column wraps and the roof beams are wrapped in white PVC, so the structure is finished without bare wood left to stain or peel. Because this is a Deckorators installation, the work carries our 25-year limited labor warranty.

The result is a covered deck that now reads as one finished piece. Mesa boards, a Mesa picture frame, Sandbar fascia and skirting, white railing and black balusters, all in the same footprint the family already used.
