A multi-level Deckorators Venture Saltwater deck resurface in Stewartsville, NJ with a picture-frame border, white vinyl railing, and a stair gate down to the pool.

At Upgryd, we recently completed a multi-level deck resurface in Stewartsville, NJ, where the existing structure wrapped along the back of the home and stepped down toward an in-ground pool. The layout was already right for the property — a lower deck off the house, a rectangular upper section, and an octagonal bump-out that opened the space up — but the surface had aged past the point where cleaning or refinishing would bring it back.

The old deck before we started, with its natural-tone wood railing and stairs down to the pool.

The boards had grayed and roughened with years of weathering, and the original wood railing had dulled in the sun. What the client wanted was to keep the footprint and flow exactly as it was — the same three deck sections, the same stair run down to the pool patio — but replace every worn surface with something that would hold its color and stand up to pool-side traffic without the yearly upkeep the old wood demanded.

The octagonal upper-deck section from the yard, showing the old structure and lattice skirting.

We stripped the deck down to its frame across all three sections and rebuilt the walking surface in Deckorators Venture decking in Saltwater, finished with a single-board picture frame border for a clean edge and matching Deckorators Venture fascia so no bare framing shows from any angle. The stair section down to the pool patio got the same treatment, with new Deckorators Venture stair treads and risers replacing boards that had absorbed the same years of moisture and sun as the decking above them.

The old railing's worn, discolored cap board before the rebuild.

For the railing, we installed white vinyl railing with black aluminum balusters and matching Wolf Vinyl railing posts around the full perimeter of both upper sections and the stairs, a combination that reads clean against the Saltwater decking without disappearing into the background the way the old faded wood did. At the top of the stairs, we added a 36-inch Deckorators aluminum stair gate in black, which keeps the pool area contained without breaking up the sightline down to the yard.

Underneath the deck, we closed in the skirting with gray vinyl lattice framed in Saltwater to match the decking above, including a dedicated access gate so the space underneath stays reachable for storage and maintenance. No LED lighting or cocktail rail were part of this scope — the client wanted the railing system to stay simple, and the finished look holds up on its own.

The resurfaced deck, house, and pool from above after the rebuild.

The result is a deck that finally matches how the family uses the yard — the upper deck holds the dining set and grill just off the kitchen door, the octagonal bump-out gives the space room to breathe, and the stairs lead straight down to the pool without a single soft or splintering board underfoot. The Saltwater tone reads as a cool, neutral gray that sits well against the home's siding and the pool's blue year-round.

Deckorators backs this decking with a manufacturer warranty against rot, splitting, and fading, so the surface is built to hold up the way the old one couldn't.
