New Life, Same Footprint | A Deck Resurface in Northampton, PA

A full deck rebuild in place, keeping the same 14x16 footprint and existing footings, finished with Deckorators Venture composite decking and a white vinyl railing.

This Northampton deck was 14 by 16 feet and had done its job for years, but what was happening underneath told the real story. Looking up from below, the joists were streaked with moss and dark staining where moisture had been sitting against the wood, and the old black-railed structure above was past the point where another round of maintenance was going to fix anything.

The plan was a full resurface: keep the same 14x16 footprint and the existing footings, since they were sound, and rebuild everything above them from scratch. We tore the old deck down to the footings and reframed it in 2x10 lumber, then decked it in Deckorators Venture composite in Saltwater, finished with a single-board picture frame border in the same color for a clean edge along the perimeter.

The stairs down to the yard are Deckorators Venture as well, and the fascia and stair risers are wrapped in white PVC for a crisp line against the decking. Along the perimeter, we installed Wolf Vinyl railing in white with white vinyl balusters and matching white railing posts, a straightforward, clean combination that reads bright against the composite decking and the home's siding. This project didn't call for a picture-frame border in a contrasting color, a cocktail-top rail cap, LED lighting, or a stair gate, so we kept the build simple and let the decking and railing carry the look on their own.

With the resurface finished, the same footprint that used to sit over a deteriorating frame now carries a full outdoor living space, furnished with a sectional, rocking chairs, and a coffee table right off the back doors. The staircase leads down to a paved patio below, giving the family a shaded spot at grade in addition to the deck up top. If your own deck's surface still looks fine but you're not sure what's happening underneath, we'd be glad to take a look and talk through what a resurface like this could mean for your home.
