A Deck Reborn, Two Ways Down, in White House Station, NJ

This deck in White House Station had gone gray with age, and the black railing and stairs down to the covered porch below had reached the point where a resurface made more sense than another repair. The plan also called for extending the deck to meet the existing concrete porch, tying the two structures together into one continuous space, and replacing two of the support columns on that porch along the way.

We stripped the old wood decking and railing down to the frame and rebuilt the surface in Deckorators Venture composite in Saltwater, finished with a single-board picture frame border in the same color along the perimeter. The fascia and the stair treads down to the yard are Deckorators Venture as well, so the color and material carry through consistently from the deck surface down every step.

For the railing, we installed Wolf Vinyl in white with black aluminum balusters and matching white railing posts, topped with solar-powered post cap lanterns at the corners. Underneath, the deck is closed up with gray vinyl lattice skirting and a dedicated access gate, and the two replaced support columns on the porch below are wrapped in white vinyl to match the rest of the trim.

With the extension tying the deck to the porch, the finished layout ended up with two separate staircases down to grade, a genuinely useful detail on a property this size, giving the family more than one way to move between the deck and the yard. The result is a full outdoor living space with room for a dining set, all set against the fresh Saltwater decking and clean white railing.
