One Level, One Vision | A Resurfaced and Extended Deck in Coopersburg, PA

Before we started, this Coopersburg home had a deck that stepped down in sections, with a pergola over part of it and a shed tucked underneath, accessed through its own door below the decking. It worked, but the layout was disjointed, and the space below the deck — including a low, wet area that had settled into more of a small pond over time — wasn't doing much for anyone.

The plan called for more than a simple resurface: we extended the deck out over the layout, brought the whole thing to one consistent level, and set the new footprint on helical pier footings driven down to solid bearing after filling the old low spot with fill dirt. Underneath, we waterproofed the area over the shed and enclosed it with vertical composite skirting finished with a matching door, so what used to be a rough access point now reads as part of the deck's finished underside.

On top, we built the new single-level surface in Deckorators Summit composite decking in Boulder, framed with a single-board picture frame border, and finished the stair treads, fascia, and risers to match. A black aluminum railing runs the full perimeter and down the stairs, mounted on aluminum structural posts rather than the wood posts that tend to warp and loosen over time.

What was a patchwork of levels, a pergola, and an awkward shed door is now one continuous deck at a single elevation, with room for dining, lounging, and a fire table setup that takes full advantage of the extended footprint.
